The HEE (Health Education England) launched a consultation on the standards for a proposed doctor apprenticeship model. HEE is aiming to get doctor apprenticeships in place in September 2022. Under this model, the future doctors will be employed for the duration of their medical degree and would do on the job training in clinical settings.

According to HEE, apprenticeship doctor-students would still be required to complete a medical degree and any apprenticeship would be signed off by the General Medical Council. The medical doctor apprenticeship will not be exclusively tailored towards general practice - also known as family or internal medicine, but also to any specialty of apprenticee’s choice.
