The modern world requires a certain fashion outlook on the profession we are in now. And medicine is not different in this agenda. As male and female doctors are required to wear a professional attire on the clinical days, there is certainly a dilemma on what to wear? For example for men, it's a golden standard to wear suit and tie, or at least trousers and button down shirt etc. For women it's a business attire that is acceptable around the world.

There is certainly a stereotype associated with wearing a particular type of clothing everyday. Doctors are generally considered as serious people, however, what most of the time we forget, is that we are the same people and we want to look modern sometimes too; let it be through fashion statements, extra accessories or by simply changing a hairstyle. Boring days are officially over - and it's time to step our game up! Today, I decided to review some of the styles that will be a great asset to doctors, medical students and medical professionals in general. Before writing this article, I consulted with the European designer, who puts together look for people of different walks of life; we are talking about regular 9 to 5 office workers down to Orlando Bloom. When I asked her, what would be one thing she would like to do for medical professionals, and what she told me, made me realize we are all doing it wrong. She revealed to me, that when she dresses people, she thoroughly understands who they are, their habits, lifestyle and general personality. She said that, out of all medical professionals, only plastic surgeons are the ones who stand out.

The following top 12 tips were given by a professional European designer for men and women:

  1. Don't be afraid to pull off a brighter color button down shirt for men. If you always wear white, try pink, try purple, but again you need to understand your personality, whether you are conservative or hip and modern. Adding a folded handkerchief in your square pocket, will give it a classic look.

  2. Matching days are over, unless you are wearing a suit. You can simply wear a slim or modern fit dark khaki pants with bow tie, leaning more on a nerdy look of late 90s.

  3. Ladies, red can make a great mark on your patients, plus they will certainly remember you. Don't be afraid to experiment with asymmetrical collar dresses and trendy weather colors.

  4. Revealing too much legs may not be an option, so instead wear different shoes, to put an accent on your feet.

  5. Heels are considered a golden standard for women doctors, however brands like Miu Miu are introducing new alternatives for a fast paced hospital life. Also, for hygienic purposes wear a closed toe shoes.

  6. For more fashionable female doctors, she suggests a nicely designed belt that is stretchy for comfortable movements.

  7. If you wear white coat most of the time, pay attention to the material quality, as it will prevent you from sweating bullets during your rounds, especially in the busiest urban hospitals.

  8. If doctor is fit, try a slim-fit or modern fit suits, better yet, any men regardless of the profession should own - one custom tailored suit. It will look like Zeus himself designed this piece of clothing for you.

  9. It's generally not a good looking picture seeing a doctor in scrubs and shoes, instead, please wear sneakers or have a spare athletic shoes or clogs.

  10. Ladies, your pager could be worn on the actual coat, that way you won't have issues with your outfit.

  11. It's also a good idea to wear a short or three-quarter length sleeves for women for comfortable movements or just in case you have extra jewelry on your hands and wrists.

  12. Remember, clothes don't make you - you make clothes look good, so if you are experimenting with style, walk tall and you might be the one to set the trend!
